Kinship figured "downwards" from grandparents to parents to children to grandchildren etc. In many societies, descent is an important principle for distribution of inheritance and definition of group membership (e.g. "sons of X are friends, sons of Y are enemies"). (See kinship, lineage, matrilineal, patrilineal, cognatic, descent group.)
