A concept with a similar meaning to alienation, but with accent on normlessness, loss of moral connectednes, or, as Durkheim calls it, of solidarity. The concept was introduced by Durkheim, who was of the opinion e.g. that anomie was an important cause of suicide in the West. (See also communitas.)
